Today, I’m going to take a break from my usual rantings to present an informative video from a saxophonist whom I greatly admire. Jeff Coffin is easily one of the most impressive saxophonists of his generation. A completely versatile player who is unfortunately not as widely known as some of his equals (Chris Potter, Joshua Redman, Branford Marsalis), Jeff Coffin, is a three-time Grammy Award winning member of Bela Fleck & the Flecktones and the Dave Matthews Band. Jeff is truly an all around ‘musician’, if anyone ever deserved to be categorized as such a thing. His music doesn’t fit into any labels, and he doesn’t want it to. The man is capable of playing in almost every single style of music imaginable, and he does it well. In addition to that, he is an exceptionally skilled doubler (among the likes of Ted Nash and Paquito D’Rivera). Above, Jeff gives a great lesson on playing the blues; something a lot of young players ignore (myself included, but I’m working on it).
Here’s some clips of Jeff’s stuff:
